Welcome Back!

Welcome back to a new school year in Class 3!  It's new starts all round, for my myself and of course the Year 4s who have joined us from Miss Birch.  We have had a great first week getting to know each other and sorting all our new routines.  The children are much further along with this than I am!

We have started looking at number and place value in Maths, something which we seem quite secure with but which is so important that we get right as it is the foundation for all that comes.  We also identified which of our times tables we need to work on, and this could and should form the basis of homework in the coming weeks.

In English, the children have written their first story for me based on the attached image.

This gave us a great idea as to where the children are as writers and, again gave me an idea of the areas we need to improve in.

We have started to look at Ancient Egypt in topic, and this week we looked at the different jobs that existed in the time of the pharaohs, and the children decided which of these they would most liked to have done.

In Geography we looked at how people chose where to build settlements - thinking about what they would need and where they would be safe.  We talked briefly about Shrewsbury and its location in the middle of a loop of the River Severn.  If you get the chance, use Google maps to look at aerial photos of different towns and discuss which physical features are nearby.

I will try and update the blog each week, to give you an idea of what we have been up to, as if your child is anything like mine, they seldom tell you what they have done in school!  Thank you for welcoming me into the school and I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Mr Davies
